Reef Fishing

It is very rare to come away empty handed as our reefs hold a large variety of species. Probably the most prized catch for the reef fisherman is the Snapper, and the most known to the Southern angler. Most commonly caught in the winter months from April to October but are available year round.

The average size is 1-3 kilo but 3-8 kilo are often caught even the odd 10 kilo. Reef fishing is very productive all year round. Other species to be targeted are: Sweet Lip, Moses Perch, Venus Tusk Fish, Drag Jew and Jew Fish, Maori Cod, Coral Trout, Red Emperor, Scarlet Sea, Perch, Pearl Perch, and many more.

Some of these species depend on the currents, so different species are more common at different times of the year.
